INTRODUCTION
The Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red (CIBER) is a consortium dependent on the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness) . The CIBERESP (Epidemiology and Public Health) is formed by 48 reference research groups, located in different hospitals, universities and research centres in Spain .
Its specific purposes are:
•	Conducting joint programmes for research, development and innovation in the line of Epidemiology and Public Health .
•	Contributing to solving healthcare problems relating to said area .
•	Promoting participation in national research activities and particularly activities included in the European Framework Programmes for R+D+I .
•	Promoting the transfer of results derived from the research processes to society and particularly to the production sector .
•	Promoting dissemination of its activities and training of competitive researchers in the field of Epidemiology and Public Health .
The creation process starts with the official publication of the regulatory framework (Ministerial Order SCO/806/2006) and of the relevant call for proposal (ISCIII Resolution, 30 March 2006), encompassed in the framework of the Ingenio 2010 Initiative, CONSOLIDER Programme . However, the Consortium has its roots in the earlier call for proposal (2002) with the creation of different group networks including some that particularly stand out: Red de grupos de Infancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA), Red de Centros de Epidemiología y Salud Pública (RCESP), Red de RESEARCH GROUPS en Servicios Sanitarios (IRYSS) and Red de Medicina Basada en la Evidencia (EMB) .
The CIBERESP, as a Consortium was formed on 29 December 2006 by signing the collaboration agreement for its creation (Official State Journal, 22 February 2011) between Instituto de Salud Carlos III, the Consejo Superior de Investigación Científica, certain research centres from the Spanish Regions of Andalusia, Catalonia, Valencia, Galicia, Madrid, Region of Murcia, Chartered Community of Navarre and the Basque Country, and other centres or institutions that are not affiliated with the Public Administrations and the approval of its Bylaws, which were amended in 2010 (Official State Journal, 22 February 2011) . Said amendment was fully in force in 2011 .
In 2013, effective effect 1 January 2014, within the framework of the public sector restructuring and rationalisation plan, the integration of CIBERESP, together with CIBER-BBN, CIBEREHD, CIBERER, CIBERES, CIBEROBN, CIBERDEM and CIBERSAM in a unique consortium named Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red, CIBER, was approved .
