Highlights
Study of the influence of prenatal exposure to environmental pollutants in glu-
tamate levels in cord blood and in glutamate transport in human placenta. The
study was conducted in collaboration with other CIBERESP groups of the INMA
project . The main finding is that prenatal exposure to organochlorine contami-
nants correlates with decreased glutamate levels in cord blood of the newborn
cohort in Valencia. It has also been observed that organochlorine contaminants
and methylmercury induce a decrease of glutamate transport in placenta tissue.
Moreover we have described that the neuromodulator activity of neurosteroid
derivatives is determined by the lipophilicity of these endocrine agents.
Finally, we have determined the behavioral alterations and neurochemical corre-
lates delayed-induced by exposure to the environmental pollutant chlorpyrifos,
of great importance in areas of intensive agriculture.
