The most relevant activities during 2013 have been the following:
Highlights
• Conduction of the first population-based study in Europe on 24-hour ambulatory

monitoring of blood pressure. This study will reveal the characteristics and

determinants, mainly lifestyles, of circadian variations in blood pressure in the
general population.

• Given the progressive growth of the older population in Europe during the

next decades, new approaches should be developed for reducing the expected

increase in dependency. Therefore, it is noteworthy that the group has secured
funding from the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union, to

identify the determinants and consequences of the frailty syndrome (FRAILOMIC
Initiative FP7-HEALTH-2012-Proposal No: 305483-2). This medical syndrome is

a good predictor of disability and dependence in the elderly; therefore, a better

understanding of frailty can help to guide new strategies for prevention and
control of dependency.

• Among the transfer activities, we have coordinated the elaboration of the

following Report for the Spanish Society of Epidemiology and the Office of the

Ombudsman of Andalucia: Excess mortality and morbidity observed in several
studies in El Campo de Gibraltar.
