HORIZONTAL PROGRAMMES
The home page has direct links to some web pages of the subprogrammes (INMA, Bi-
bliopro, Observatory of Health Inequality, MCC Spain), other actions and activities, as
well as to the digital version of the Newsletter.
The first issue of the CIBERESP Newsletter came out in February 2009, and it is an
accessible instrument for communicating CIBERESP’s scientific activity. In 2013, two
widely distributed issues of the Newsletter were published in PDF format.
Science CIBERESP participated along with other CIBERs in Science Week 2013 held in Madrid
and Catalonia. It conducted two different events to inform the general public of the cu-
Week 2013
rrent state of biomedical research of excellence in Spain and particularly its outcomes.
This joint CIBER initiative was held in Madrid at Instituto de Salud Carlos III on No-
vember 4 through a workshop entitled “Workshop: CIBER Scientific MICROPOLYX”. The
CIBERESP participated in said event by holding an interactive mini-workshop about
communicable disease outbreaks conducted by CIBERESP Group 32. This mini-work-
shop targets students in the final years of the 4-year Mandatory Secondary Education
(ESO) and high school to introduce CIBER’s areas of work in an entertaining and enga-
ging manner to youngsters and to stimulate their interest in health research. An online
tool (developed by international public health agencies) was used in this workshop to
explain basic concepts on the epidemiology of communicable diseases, such as infec-
tivity, pathogenicity, modes of transmission, vectors, epidemic, prevention and control
activities, etc. Students had the opportunity to participate in the resolution of a case
where public health interventions to control an epidemic outbreak are presented.
