Main objective: to study the epidemiology of respiratory infections.

• Streptococcus pneumoniae infection.

- Pneumococcal invasive infection in paediatric and adult populations: inci-
dence, serotypes and genotypes.

- Non-invasive pneumococcal infection: otitis media and conjunctivitis. Sero-

types and genotypes. Antibiotic resistance.
- Studies on vaccines. Impact of the 13 -valent conjugate vaccine. Compari-

son with the 7-valent vaccine. Influence of childhood vaccination with the new

13-valent vaccine on invasive infection and nasopharyngeal carriage in the first
years of life.
13
20
-	Design of new pneumococcal typing techniques.
T
R
- Determine the evolution of S. pneumoniae antibiotic resistance over time: PO
new serotypes causing infection and genetic resistance determinants; influence E
L R
of antibiotic consumption in resistance; spread of multi-resistant clones after A
NU
the introduction of conjugate vaccines.
N
- To confirm the replacement of the “resistant serotypes” as a result of the A
 /
commercialization of 13-valent conjugate vaccine in 2010.
ES
ER
-	Influence of childhood vaccination on antibiotic resistance in adults. B
CI
• Streptococcus pyogenes infection.

132
- Incidence and characterization of strains causing invasive disease.
