We are leading several international research consortiums on the main lines of
Highlights
research:

• Causes of Mortality: Validation of the Minimally Invasive Autopsy (MIA) tool for

cause of death investigation in developing countries. PI’s: Dr. C Menéndez, Dr. Q.
Bassat and Dr. J Ordi. Funder Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (1.4 M$).

• Mechanisms of Immunity to Malaria Vaccine Candidates: Understanding RTS,S

malaria vaccine-induced protection through integrated analysis of antibody, B Cell

and T Cell immune responses. PI Dr. C Dobaño. Funder NIH (3M$) and Identifying
correlates of protection to accelerate vaccine trials: systems evaluation of two

models of experimentally-induced immunity to malaria. PI Dr. C.Dobaño. Funder:
FP7 (2.8 M€).

• HIV/AIDS: Development of novel gastrointestinal biomarkers for use in HIV
incidence determination in a sub-Saharian African setting. PI Dr. D Naniche.

Funder: Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (1M$)

Some of the international research consortiums lead by researchers from our

group presented results in 2013:

• The results from a trial evaluating alternative drugs to prevent malaria in
pregnancy were presented at the World Health Organization (WHO) by Dr. C

Menndez in July 2013.

• The results from different multicentre studies on malaria research coordinated

from the group were presented at the Conference “Advances Plasmodium Vivax
Malaria Research” organized by the The New York Academy of Sciences in May

2013, and at the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM) last November 2013 in 13
Durban (South Africa), the main panafrican malaria conference.
