• Rabies and another bat-associated viruses.

The group of the National Center of Microbiology is officially recognized as na-

tional reference laboratory for several zoonoses, including rabies in humans and
suspected animals. Additionally to this official activity, the group currently keeps

research activity in the following aspects.

- Development and evaluation of diagnostic methodologies for rabies.

- Molecular Epidemiology of canine rabies in Ceuta and Melilla.

- Epidemiology and pathogenesis of bat rabies.

- Search of new potentially emergent viruses in bats.

- Efficiency of rabies vaccines.

• Neurological Diseases of viral etiology. Etiology of meningitis and encephalitis
in Spain.

• Polyomavirus disease in the immune-compromised. é

Highlights
During year 2013, the group started to work in a collaborative project funded by
the special program for health research of the Spanish government, about meas-

les, mumps and rubella. This has been done under the subprogram of vaccine pre-

ventable diseases. The program of transmissible diseases has agreed to dedicate
the activity of a contracted researcher specifically to the development of this par-

ticular project. In fact, a first publication about mumps has been already publis-
hed as a result of this work complementing the international study about mumps

sero-epidemiology published in 2013. Moreover, the group has participated in co-

llaborative studies about pertussis in the frame of projects leaded by other groups
of the program. Several relevant studies about rabies have been published during 13
20
2013. New rhabdoviruses, one of them a lyssavirus, are described in Spain in two T
OR
of them. The group also participated on reviews about surveillance of rabies in P
Europe together with the most relevant groups in the Continent. It has also par- RE
L
ticipated in the revision of the current protocols for rabies prevention in domestic A
animals and for actuation on animal bites. This revision has been made as a result NU
N
of the epidemiological alert of imported rabies in June. These studies has been A

complemented with other on the etiology of viral meningitis and encephalitis in S
Spain in the frame of another project finished the year before. Finally, a colla- RE

borative publication on flu has been published as a part of past CIBER projects .
